Malaysian airliner downed 18 years to the day after TWA Flight 800 crashed

The crash of a Malaysia Airlines flight Thursday in Ukraine occurred on the 18th anniversary of TWA Flight 800, which crashed in New York in 1996, killing 230 people.

The TWA 800 crash, which was ultimately balmed on a fuel tank explosion, happened after the plane took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport. It was initially thought the flight might have been downed by a terroristic act. Even today, many consider it possible that TWA 800 was destroyed by a missile or rocket of some kind. …

CNN recapped the TWA tragedy, noting that many still question whether the four-year investigation that determined the fuel tank explosion was accurate.

“A full four years after the crash of TWA Flight 800, the NTSB released its official report: It found the probable cause of the accident was a spark in the center fuel tank that eventually led to the explosion that brought down the aircraft,” CNN said. “While they offered their best theory on where the spark came from, they never found a definitive answer.”
